Age is not an obstacle to surfing – this is what the Brazilians decided to prove. 300 surfers over 50 years old gathered on the beach in Santos, in the state of São Paulo. Many of them became interested in this sport just a few years ago.
The participants of the event also tried to break the world record for the number of people surfing at the same time. It was not possible to achieve the goal, since only 98 people stood on the boards at the same time. And the previous achievement is 110 surfers. This record was set in 2009 in South Africa.
However, the failure did not spoil the mood of the Brazilian surfers. Passion still gives them joy.
Marco Horta, Santos resident:
“Some people have retired and have nothing to do. Some suffered from depression, some had other problems. Then they became interested in surfing and began spending time in nature, interacting with people and making friends. And they became happy.”
Although the record was not broken, the organizers consider this event to be the largest gathering of surfers over 50 years old.
