In his speech at the evening, Lefkoşa Mayor Mehmet Harmanci spoke about the policies and projects they have implemented since he came to power to improve the living standards of people with special needs, their social adaptation, access to transportation, education and employment opportunities.
Harmanji recalled that in 2014, an important decision was made for society when Celen Chagansoy, a person with special needs, was elected to the municipal council. He noted that Chagansoy has a good understanding of the needs of both children and their families.
According to Harmanji, LTB first of all solved the problem of the lack of an appropriate contact person in the municipality by setting up a special committee. Then the “Lefkosha without barriers” unit was created. With these steps, they have solved one of the most important needs of families – access to transportation.
Harmandji said , “Fortunately, today many children with special needs studying in Lefkoşa schools are brought there by the ‘Lefkoşa Barrier-Free’ unit. To be honest, we are very happy and proud of it.”
He also listed other initiatives: the creation of a dance school without barriers, the provision of educational scholarships, the creation of an athletics team and the creation of a Rhythm Orchestra together with the art studio Mavi Sanat, which also performed at the evening.
