Environmental Group Discovers Location of Historic St. Anthony’s Gate in Famagusta

The environmental and cultural heritage group “Always Friends of Nature” has announced a revolutionary discovery concerning the ancient walls of Famagusta. Their study allows us to determine the location of one of the four historical gates of the city – the Gate of St. Anthony.

In a written statement, the group’s chairman, Yusuf Yüksel Şentuğ, shared the details of the find:

“Based on the information we have collected and the research we have done, we have determined the location of the Gate of St. Anthony. In addition, we have identified the paths that the people of Famagusta once used to access the sea and which were popularly called ‘holes’.”

Dr. Özkan Korun led the research work, during which the internal and external city walls were studied. According to the team’s findings, the St. Anthony Gate, also known as the Karpaz Gate, was used mainly for horse-drawn carts coming from the Karakol region and did not have direct access to the sea. However, the nearby passages, historically called “women’s” and “men’s”, were used by the inhabitants as a means of access to the sea.

We, the ‘eternal friends of nature’, are proud and happy to shed light on the events that took place 500 years ago,” Şentuğ added.

This discovery not only complements the historical understanding of Famagusta’s ancient infrastructure, but also highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.”
