Here everyone is for himself. In Buñol, Spain, there is a tomato battle. Thousands of people throw ripe, juicy tomatoes at each other. The famous festival is called “La Tomatina”.
Tomatoes are bought in the Extremadura region – they are cheaper there. 120 tons of tomatoes are brought on seven trucks.
The main rule of the festival is to crush the tomatoes before throwing. Also, you should not take objects with you that can injure someone.
Buñol has a population of 9,000 and up to 40,000 guests from Spain and foreign countries come here during the festival. As there is not enough housing for everyone, many people stay in nearby Valencia.
“La Tomatina” takes place during the festival dedicated to Catholic saints. The progenitor of the fun battle was a comic tomato fight between locals in 1945. During the reign of dictator Francisco Franco, the tomato battle was banned. But in the 70s, the tradition was revived.
