The Legend of Atlantis

Atlantis is a mythical island-state. The most detailed description of Atlantis is known from Plato, Herodotus, Diodorus Siculus, Posidonius, Strabo and Proclus. The location of Atlantis has not yet been determined. But there are plenty of “historical clues” that point to the Mediterranean.

The hypothesis of the Mediterranean origin of Atlantis was expressed as early as 1854 by the Russian statesman A.S. Norov. In his book “An Inquiry on Atlantis”, he quotes the words of Pliny the Elder (23 AD-79 AD) that Cyprus and Syria once formed a single whole. However, after the earthquake, Cyprus broke away and became an independent island. This information is also confirmed by the Arab geographer Ibn Yakut. The famous French researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau also made his contribution. He explored the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea in search of traces of an ancient civilization. Thanks to Cousteau, many new discoveries were obtained.

Pirates of the Mediterranean

Over the past 2,000 years, the Mediterranean Sea has been home to many pirate settlements. For example, Julius Caesar was captured by them in his youth and barely managed to ransom himself. After that, Pompey and his army marched along the entire coast and carried out a clean-up operation. For the next 500 years, piracy in the Mediterranean was forgotten. But in the 5th century AD, the great migration of peoples threw the Germanic tribe of the Vandal into North Africa. In just 20 years, they were able to elevate piracy to the rank of state policy. The kings of the Vandals dictated their terms to everyone. The Vandal state existed for about 100 years and was a nightmare for the entire Mediterranean. Only the Byzantines managed to defeat it. After them, the Arabs came to North Africa, who liked the traditions of piracy.

The XVI century was the heyday of piracy. The main heroes of that era were the Greeks Urouge and Hayraddin Barbarossa. As well as the Italian Uluj Ali (Giovanni Dionigi), and the Albanian Murat Rais, who became famous for capturing the Spanish viceroy. But in 1835, the Turks established control over Tripolitania and put an end to piracy there. The sultans of Morocco, under the pressure of European countries, had to abandon the policy of piracy. Self-government in the Arab countries of North Africa virtually ceased. Only after that did the Mediterranean Sea become a safe navigation zone.

Aphrodite – Greek Goddess of Love

According to the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, Aphrodite was born near the island of Cythera from the sea foam. And then the wind brought her to the island of Cyprus. Hence her nickname “Cypris”.

The only clothes of the beauty were her gorgeous hair. Since then, Cyprus has become the island of the goddess of love and beauty! “And the smiling goddess of Cyprus, where in Paphos her temple stands with a fragrant altar,” wrote Homer in his poem “The Odyssey”.

Nereids of the Mediterranean Sea

In terms of the number of myths about mermaids, Ancient Greece ranks first. Oceanus and Thetis were two sea titans. They gave birth to countless girls (Oceanids, nymphs, Nereids and mermaids), who were later “appointed” by the deities of reservoirs. They were believed to be the most beautiful of all their sisters living in the Mediterranean Sea. They were distinguished by their kindness and always came to the aid of sailors in distress.

Some of the Nereids were able to achieve a prominent position in mythological history. For example, Thetis married Peleus and gave birth to Achilles, a hero of the Trojan War. Another Nereid, Amphitrite, married one of the most powerful gods, Poseidon.

Ancient Greek Mythology – Zeus
