The Christmas market at St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest has been recognized as the best in Europe more than once. Here you can not only buy handicrafts, but also make a gastronomic journey. This year, almost 200 types of food and drinks are offered here.
The official culinary curator of the fair is the famous Hungarian chef Lazar Kovács. He visits the market every day and goes around the stalls where food is prepared.
Lazar Kovacs, chef:
“As the Advent Basilica is now not only a Christmas market, but also a tourist attraction, we also thought about foreigners and offered them an even wider range of dishes. So here we have national dishes that reflect our traditions and true Hungarian tastes.”
At the fair, you can try all kinds of meat dishes, as well as traditional pastries such as charcoal-grilled kürtőškalács, langos fried in boiling oil, and flodni.
There are more than 100 stalls at the fair. Local craftsmen sell clothes, jewelry, souvenirs and, of course, Christmas tree decorations.
The Christmas market at St. Stephen’s Basilica will close on the evening of January 1. On this day, by the way, lentil dishes will be sold here.
