In this unusual New York store, you can exchange the books you read for jars of pickles. And it’s called Sweet Pickle Books. The owner, Leigh Alshuler, says that in the mornings she often finds a queue of people who want to get inside the store. In the past, Leigh worked as the director of public relations at the legendary New York bookstore Strand. But in 2020, she decided to start her own business. At first, her idea seemed too extravagant: she decided to combine the sale of books with the sale of pickles. Soon, customers who brought used books for sale began to ask her for cucumbers instead of money. Most of all, they liked cucumbers with dill, as well as spicy ones. Many come here even from other states. Leigh says that she did not choose the place for the store by chance. It is located on the Lower East Side, which used to be the center for the sale of pickles in New York.
