The grand opening of the Şampiyon Melekler Sports Complex, built with the support of the European Union, UNDP, the Ministry of National Education and the municipality, took place in Gazimagusa. This multifunctional sports facility is designed for various sports and was created in memory of Şampiyon Melekler. UNDP representative Jahongir Haydarov stressed that the complex symbolizes the resilience and fighting spirit of athletes, creating a safe space for young people.
Selçuk Yörükoğulları from the EU Coordination Center noted that the preservation of the names of Şampiyon Melekler is a shared responsibility, and the young athletes training here will continue their dreams. At the ceremony in their honor, the volleyball team of the Gazimagusa Turkish Maarifa College played a symbolic match. Stefan Simosas, representative of the European Commission, stressed that the opening of the complex is not only a sporting event, but also an act of remembrance of the victims of the earthquake.
Deputy Minister of National Education Aytunç Şirket and Chairman of the Şampiyon Melekler Memorial Association Rushen Karakaya noted the importance of preserving their heritage. They stressed that the complex will become a place where Şampiyon Melekler’s dreams will live, and also thanked everyone who supported the project. The mayor of Gazimagusa, Süleyman Uluçay, recalled the tragedy of February 6, expressing gratitude to everyone who helped preserve the memory of the athletes, and promised to continue supporting such initiatives.
