Today we decided to write a couple of lines about real estate in Kyrenia (Girne).
North Cyprus Real Estate Kyrenia (Girne) is a unique place in the northern part of the island. After all, the first mentions of settlements in historical scrolls date back to the XII-XI centuries B.C. This is an island with a three-thousand-year history, its own identity and rich history. Kyrenia was founded by Phoenician traders. During the Roman rule, as well as the Greek, the city became a major trading port and had a protected fortress. By the way, Kyrenia is also one of the first places where Christianity was officially spread. What can you see from the sights here? Where to walk, what to see? Let’s plunge into history a little, and then consider several options for real estate in this city.
Kyrenia (Girne)
For a long time, quarantine measures have been introduced in the world, which only prevent tourists from traveling. In 2020, there were really few tourists at the height of the season. But 2021 surprised everyone – the tourist flow has grown! And this only pleases both travel companies and locals. Kyrenia is a storehouse of history and amazing places. Let’s consider them…
Kyrenia Castle
Kyrenia Castle is located in the old, old harbor of the ancient city of Kyrenia. The castle was built in the VII century by the Byzantines to protect their territories from Arab invaders. It has been rebuilt many times. The castle was constantly changing hands, probably only the Chinese or Japanese did not own it 🙂 As a result, it was captured by the English king Richard the Lionheart. Next in line was the Lusignan dynasty. After that, in the XIII century, the castle was almost completely rebuilt.
However, as a result of the war with the Genoese, the fortress was badly damaged and the Venetians were already engaged in reconstruction. But still, soon the Turks captured the newly built castle and turned it into a military base. After Cyprus gained independence, the castle was reopened to tourists. Now there is a shipwreck museum on the territory of the fortress. There are wrecks of an ancient ship of the IV century B.C. Interestingly, they were discovered in 1965. The castle has many archaeological finds, icons and works of art.
The Castle of St. Hilarion
One of the favorite places for tourists. This is right, since the view of the city is very beautiful…
The Castle of St. Hilarion is the ancient residence of the Cypriot kings. I think that the most picturesque of the Kyrenia mountain castles is the city, right in the palm of your hand!
The castle is located on the slopes of the mountains, just above Kyrenia. The highest point of the castle is 732 meters above sea level.
Buffavento Castle
On the northern part of the island, there are also three brother-fortresses of the Middle Ages on the mountain ranges: Cantara, Buffavento and St. Hilarion. They were built around the VII-VIII centuries to ensure the protection of the island from Arab raids. There is an opinion that the name “Buffavento” is of Italian origin and translates as:
- “Windswept”
- “Blasted by the Winds”
- “Blown by the Seven Winds”
- “Protection from the winds”
- “Resisting the Winds”
- “Castle on the Seven Winds”
And really, it sounds very beautiful… 🙂
Bellapais Abbey
It is a favorite place for travelers, the Gothic architecture of Northern Cyprus, built by the Crusaders in the early XIII century. At the very beginning of the reign of the Lusignan dynasty, and unfortunately destroyed during the Ottoman Empire. The abbey itself received the name “Bellapais” under the Venetians. Amazing place! Going inside, you get a little goosebumps. I understand that history is looking at you now…
Museum of Icons in the Church of the Archangel Michael
Not far from Kyrenia, near the harbor, there is the Orthodox Church of the Archangel Michael. This is a white-white building, built back in 1860. Previously, there was a tower in its place, which strengthened the city walls. And a little later, a high bell tower was added, which woke up the townspeople with spring ringing.
By the way, what is interesting, but the money for the purchase of the bell was allocated by a Turkish merchant, who was friends with the rector of the church in those “shaggy years”. In Kyrenia, you can also visit the Monastery of St. St. Makarios, the Church of Antiphonitis, or the botanical station “Herbarium of Northern Cyprus”. There are many, many beautiful places in the city. And if you set out to visit all the most beautiful places in Northern Cyprus, then there are countless of them… Come and see for yourself… 🙂 A large number of Russian speakers live on the island – people from Russia, our brothers from Ukraine, Belarus and the CIS and Baltic countries.
A little more about Kyrenia…
Kyrenia is a large city, just like Limassol in Southern Cyprus. All interesting events in the TRNC, for the most part, take place here. The city has restaurants, bars, cafes, casinos, and many universities. There are many different beaches at hotels. Also, many properties are sold under the mountains and near the sea. Kyrenia herself is very elongated. Nicosia is also interesting, but here it is a resort town. By buying real estate here, you get an apartment among the developed infrastructure. And it is easier to sell, or if you buy it for rent/daily – then rent it out. Kyrenia has its own port, for example, you can buy a yacht and moor it in the harbor. Famagusta also has a harbor, it also has its advantages. But we want to note that Kyrenia is a large and self-sufficient town. So, we are waiting for you to visit us.
If you want to organize a “viewing tour” in Northern Cyprus, then you are welcome…
