During the hot summer months, cities heat up to unprecedented temperatures. Due to the lack of greenery, so-called “heat islands” are formed there, which are much hotter than in rural areas.
Now German inventors have created special oases that will help reduce the temperature. A Frankfurt-based startup has developed an architectural solution for urban landscaping.
Its vertical landscaping system includes diagonally spaced roofs with plants that provide plenty of shade.
They use 25 different varieties of annual climbing plants. Each has unique features, such as rapid growth, bright flowering, or fragrance. These plants also require less root space and water.
Stéphane Diez, designer:
“It’s a static structure that keeps the plants in place throughout the season. And we grow seasonal plants on it, different varieties that grow up to ten meters within one year and provide shade and fresh air in the hot summer.”
For the 2024 London Design Festival, the startup collaborated with a Munich-based design studio and the American Hardwood Export Council.
