These dogs come to California’s Del Mar beach with their owners almost every day to prepare for a big swim. They are being trained for the Surf-A-Thon Dog Surfing Championship in September.
Here, everyone is introduced to special boards for this sport, floating devices for dogs and safety rules on the water.
Dog surfing instructor Scott Owens comes to class with his two Dalmatians, Bentley and Bailey.
The instructor says that the sight of dogs riding the waves attracts many people. Everyone is especially surprised that the pets show great skill.
Dog surfing competitions are organized by the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The event was first held 18 years ago. Usually, during swims, money is collected for the maintenance of pets, as well as programs for finding new owners for them.
Scott Owens, dog surfing instructor:
“We’re like one big family. People come and spend time with their dogs as well as their children. And this is a big plus. This holds a large place in our hearts.”
