President Ersin Tatar held a meeting with the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar at the Presidential Palace. The talks began at 10:30 a.m. and are expected to conclude with a press statement. Holguin’s visit comes as part of her reappointment, and she intends to promote the implementation of the six cooperation initiatives agreed earlier in Geneva, as well as to pave the way for an informal meeting scheduled for July. Prior to that, the diplomat met with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, and at the end of the visit to Cyprus, she will go to Turkey, Greece and the UK – guarantor countries.
Holguin’s reappointment to the post of personal representative of UN Secretary-General António Guterres took place on May 2 after agreements reached at an expanded meeting in Geneva. Guterres instructed her to resume contacts with both sides of the Cyprus conflict and submit recommendations for further steps. Recall that Holgin had already performed these duties from January to July 2024, but then she came to the conclusion that there was a lack of a common basis for the start of official negotiations.
