Bellapais

Bellapais is a small village located 4 kilometers from the city of Kyrenia. The main attraction of the village is the Abbey of Bellapais, begun in 1198–1205 and enlarged in the 13th century. To understand a little about the history of this island and the village of Bellapais, you can plunge into 1952. The English writer Lawrence Durrell lived and worked in this village. At that time, he worked as an English teacher, and in his spare time he wrote books. A few years later, when the war between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots broke out, he began to take notes of what was happening. Durrell at this time left teaching and worked as a public relations officer in Nicosia. The book Bitter Lemons (1957) is his vision of the events of those tragic years.
