North Cyprus is a Cypriot land with Turkish culture, English laws and traffic, as well as Greek traditions in architecture.
The island has preserved many ancient sights with untouched virgin nature. Many people, after visiting a piece of paradise, write on social networks: “I love you, Northern Cyprus.” What is special about North Cyprus? How did it happen that the country has an unrecognized status? We offer to understand the features of this beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea.
Latitude and longitude
The island of Cyprus is located at: 35 north latitude and 33 east longitude. It is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea at a distance of:
- Nicosia to Cairo (Egypt) 602 km
- to the city of Damascus (Syria) 330 km
- to Beirut (Lebanon) 245 km
- and, for example, to Moscow (Russia) only 2,308 kilometers 🙂
Flora of the island
As befits all islands, the flora and fauna of Northern Cyprus is unique. Of the numerous Mediterranean islands, Cyprus is home to many endemic species of plants and insects. Endemic – in biology, for example, animals and plants that are found only in a certain area are called. What can we say about the uniqueness of weather conditions. Now it is November 5, 2021, Moscow time is 13:38, and the temperature is 44 degrees (in the open rays of the sun).
About 40 species of orchids cover the Cypriot fields with a beautiful carpet in spring. The air is filled with aromas. And many plantations of orange fruits (lemons, oranges, tangerines) work such wonders – the air is filled with the aromas of exotic plants and flowers… By the way, if we talk about herbs, there are about 2000 species of them here. There are many olive and karob trees. Many types of lemons have a sweet aftertaste, which indicates that they are crossed with other types of citrus fruits. Other fruit plants are also in abundance:
- Bananas
- grape
- pomegranate
- dates
- Peaches
- apricots
- fig
- quince
And strawberries, what kind of strawberries are here, hang in large poured bunches… And thanks to the climate, strawberries can be harvested almost all year round. Among the rare species of flora, there are such species as:
- Cistus Cretan
- Orchid Separias vomeracea
- Chorizia magnificentis
- Paulownia tomentosa
- Ophrys
- Anemone (anemone plants)
- Christmas Star
- and much more
Fauna of Northern Cyprus
The fauna is unique. The island is very popular with turtles. Here you can see loggerhead sea turtles (lat. Caretta) or green turtles (from lat. Chelonia mydas). These amazing creatures can be admired forever. They love Cyprus and lay their eggs here that the future offspring have returned to this amazing island again…
The island is very well located and the route of migratory birds migrating between Europe and Africa passes through Cyprus. For example, they like to visit:
- Cyprus Wheatear
- Cyprus Warbler
- or the very diverse population of flamingos
And in the recent past, donkeys played a very important role in agriculture. Now they live on the Karpas Peninsula and delight local tourists with their cute faces. They’re still those beggars… 🙂 Many passing cars like to treat these friendly animals with carrots. The Cypriot donkey is the symbol of the island. This is an animal that is listed in the “Red Book”. And also, interestingly, cats are simply adored on the island. This is some kind of cult… 🙂 Especially the British, who create funds for this and feed animals with the money transferred from friends. Cats were brought here from Egypt, back in ancient times. Their task was to destroy snakes. By the way, there is even a cat monastery here, but the cats in it are not nuns 🙂 They are kings and queens here 🙂
Wines & Beverages
In case you did not know, Cyprus is considered to be the very first country in the world for the cultivation of vines. The art of winemaking here is rich in traditions. Since ancient times, Cypriot wines have been known throughout the East. The first mention of winemaking in Cyprus is in the Song of Solomon. And there were legends about Cypriot grapes, which Homer and Pliny the Elder wrote about. Grape seeds, for example, have been found in ancient tombs and date back to 4500 B.C. By the way, Richard the Lionheart was very praised about Cypriot wine.
According to historical data, the first production of Commandaria began near Limassol, in the castle of Kolossi. It was here that the dessert wines of Cyprus were produced. Other popular wines in Cyprus are:
- Cypriot anise vodka “Raki”
- Filfar Orange Liqueur
- Dry white wine “Palomino”
- Othello Dry Red
- Semi-dry white wine “St. Panteleimon”
- or Five Kings brandy
Today, many wineries in Cyprus work for export around the world. And their wonderful wines win international competitions.
A little poetry
Oh, Cyprus is the God of copper kings
High mountains and palm alleys
Born on the sea by eruption
Only by the glory of Paradise the island is defeated! It is assembled from warmth and light
From the salt of the Mediterranean dawn
Washed with the purest water
Aphrodite has an earthly home! No wonder the Gods fell
in love with Him as a temporary shelter
And whoever wanted to live
on it He does not skimp on comfort! [Cyprianna]
