As a result of the survey initiated after the notification was received, an ancient rock-cut burial site was discovered in the port of Gazimagusa, which, according to preliminary estimates, dates back to the Hellenistic period.
According to a statement from the Department of Antiquities and Museums, which is part of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environmental Protection under the Deputy Prime Minister, on June 21, at about 18:00, a report was received about a collapse on the main axis in the port area.
The statement notes that the specialists who promptly arrived at the scene during the first examination established that the collapse occurred as a result of the presence of an ancient tomb carved into the rock.
Given the seriousness of the situation, security measures were taken in the area in coordination with the Gazimagusa Police Department and the port security service. The report emphasizes: “Until the start of excavations, the territory will be guarded around the clock.”
In the excavations that began yesterday morning, it was found that the entrance to the rock tomb, which has the shape of a room with three wedges (beds for burial), was closed with stone blocks. According to initial estimates, the tomb dates back to the Hellenistic period.
