The Meritta Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre held its fourth annual workshop with the participation of international experts, which took place from 1 to 3 August at the Merit Royal Diamond Hotel. The seminar was devoted to the topic “The impact of plastic pollution on sea turtles and the development of treatment methods”. As part of the event, one of the rehabilitated turtles, who completed the course of treatment, was released into their natural habitat. It was accompanied by Dr. Doane Sözbilen and singer Ece Sechkin, who adopted the turtle.
The seminar, organized under the leadership of the director of the center, biologist Silem Sargyn Kara, brought together leading scientists in the field of sea turtle ecology. Among the participants were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Giorgia Gioacchini, Prof. Dr. Eyüp Başkale, Dr. Ayfer Şirin, and Veterinarian Mehmet Ozay Bedizci. Experts discussed scientific studies that included analyzing the blood and organs of turtles in order to study chemical pollutants and the accumulation of heavy metals. A protocol for future research and experiments was also prepared.
The second day of the workshop concluded with the release of a sea turtle named Ammadi Murat, who had undergone treatment. The turtle was found in June in a state of drowning and taken to the Center. The event on the beach of Merit Royal and Merit Crystal Cove was attended by hotel representatives, turtle rescuer Captain Shalwar, scientists, as well as nature and animal lovers.
