The Day of Peace and Freedom, dedicated to the 51st anniversary of the Cyprus peacekeeping operation, is celebrated in the TRNC with solemn ceremonies. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the country to participate in the events, who will take part in ceremonies at the monument to Ataturk and on Dr. Küçük Boulevard. The festive events began the day before with a speech by President Ersin Tatar and 21 artillery salvos, as well as ceremonies at memorial sites.
Today’s events started with ceremonies at Yavuz Beach and at the Monument of Martyrs in Lefkoşa. In the afternoon, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Atatürk Monument, followed by a military parade on Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard, in the presence of the two presidents. The celebrations will end in the evening with a reception at the Presidential Complex, organized by Ersin Tatar and his wife Sibel Tatar.
Festive events are also held in the regions: in Girne – Solo Türk air show after the parade, in Guzelyurt, Iskele, Lefk and Mehmetcik – with wreath-laying, anthem, poetry recitation and folk dances. As part of the holiday, the warships of the Turkish Navy – a submarine, a missile boat and a frigate moored in the port of Girne – are also open to the public.
