Northern Cyprus, full name – Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In theory, an independent state, although de facto, Turkey has political and economic influence on the northern part of the island. The capital of Northern Cyprus is the city of Nicosia or Lefkosa in the Turkish version. By the way, Nicosia is the only city in the world that is the capital of 2 states at the same time. If you look at the city from above, you can see the border passing right within the city – the buffer zone.
A third of the island, 36% of the territory, is occupied by Northern Cyprus (TRNC). And 2/3 or 59% is occupied by the Republic of Cyprus – the southern part of the island. And about 3% is the area of the “green line” dividing the island. The border between the two states is controlled by UN peacekeepers to maintain peace and order on the island. And the remaining couple of percent are occupied by British military bases.
Facts about North Cyprus
In Northern Cyprus , traffic is on the left side of the road. The Turkish lira is the national currency of the TRNC. Recently, coins with animals and plants have been issued. They speak mainly Turkish, but many of the locals are fluent in English. The country’s main airport is Ercan. Only planes of Turkish airlines fly here and, exclusively, only from Turkey. So far, the international community does not recognize this territory. There are also many high-class hotels in Northern Cyprus. And according to many tourists, hotels here are better than on the south side of the island.
And the TRNC is also called the Turkish Las Vegas. And all due to the fact that gambling enthusiasts come here for poker tournaments. Casinos operate here officially and this is the lion’s share of the existing treasury. Neither in Turkey, nor in the territory of Southern Cyprus There is no casino! Alas, it is prohibited.
