National Sovereignty and Children’s Day

Northern Cyprus is considered an independent country. But still, many Turkish citizens consider her “Erdogan’s dacha” or a daughter who has grown up, but she needs constant help. For example, financial, most often 🙂 Therefore, all Turkish holidays are celebrated in Northern Cyprus as well. Although this is not Turkey! In general, the Turkish Cypriots confused us and themselves too… 🙂 Okay… Let’s talk about the holidays! April 23 is a special holiday dedicated to children. Children’s Day (Çocuk Bayramı). Children’s Day is celebrated in honor of the first convocation of the Great Assembly in 1920 in Ankara. This is the first step in the war of liberation. Therefore, the holiday has a second name – National Sovereignty Day (Ulusal Egemenlik). “The future of the entire nation is laid in childhood,” Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said. On this day, all adults had to give up their authority for a while… 🙂

Labor Day

The holiday of May 1, 2022 can be considered as a two-day day off, even if it coincides with Sunday. May 1 was first celebrated in the Ottoman Empire since 1911 by workers of tobacco, cotton and port enterprises. Officially, it has been celebrated throughout the country since 1923. For example, in 1977, at a rally in Taksim Square, there were dead and wounded as a result of fire. After this incident, May 1 disappeared not only from the list of all holidays, but also received a ban. And only in 2009, this day was again recognized as a public holiday, but under a new motto “Day of Labor and Solidarity”.

Ramadan Holiday

The holy holiday of Ramadan is the month of the lunar Muslim calendar. In Ramadan , the Quran was sent down to the people. In this month, daily fasting is prescribed, as well as diligence in performing the rites of worship of the Almighty, spiritual improvement and in performing good deeds.

Atatürk Memorial Day, Youth and Sports Day

May 19 is a national holiday. Unlike some other secular patriotic events, this national celebration is celebrated on a grand scale. Initially, this date had nothing to do with Youth Day. In those distant times, Turkey was at war with Greece and the basis of the independence movement was made up of young people. And Ataturk always put young people at the forefront of the new state. For the first time, the Day of Youth and Sports was celebrated on May 24, 1935 as “Ataturk Day”.

Eid al-Adha holiday

Eid al-Adha (in Turkic) or Eid al-Adha (in Arabic) is a holiday of sacrifice, which is one of the main holidays of Muslims. It is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah of the Islamic lunar calendar and lasts 3 days. The essence of the holiday is not so much the sacrifice as the “approaching Allah” through this rite. The most pious Muslims voluntarily fast for 10 days before the feast of sacrifice. And already at night (on the eve of the holiday) they spend in prayers.

Day of Peace and Freedom

On the night of July 19-20, the holiday “Barış ve Özgürlük Bayramı” – the Day of Peace and Freedom – is celebrated in Northern Cyprus. The Turkish army invaded northern Cyprus to restore peace to the Turkish Cypriots. After the events of 1974, Cyprus became divided into two parts. In Northern Cyprus, the “Day of Freedom and Peace” is celebrated as the anniversary of the Turkish intervention. This celebration is accompanied by the raising of the flag of Turkey and the flag of the TRNC. And all kinds of military parades and national celebrations.

Day of Social Resistance

On August 1, 1958, the Turkish Resistance Organization against Greece was established. The plans of the neighboring country were to annex the entire island to Greece. And the Turkish Cypriots were persecuted and needed protection. The Cypriot resistance (by the Turkish population) was waged until 1974, and after the Turkish invasion, the northern part of the island of Cyprus was liberated from the Greeks and secured by the Turkish Cypriots. The local population celebrates this day with great celebration.

Victory Day

In Northern Cyprus, Victory Day is accompanied by the laying of wreaths at the monuments in honor of Ataturk. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a Turkish ruler, ordered a large military campaign against the Greek troops. As a result, in 1922, the Turkish troops won. In honor of this event, on August 30, solemn events are held in Turkey, as well as in Northern Cyprus.

Mevlit Kandili

The holiday of October 8 “Mawlid al-Nabi” (birth of the Prophet Muhammad) is celebrated in Turkey and in the TRNC. Despite the fact that Mevlit Kandili (Nativity of the Prophet) is not a state celebration, its celebration is practically no different from festivities. The real attributes of the holiday are the mesmerizing illumination of mosques and special pastries.

Day of the Turkish Republic

On October 29, 1923, Turkey was officially recognized as an independent republic. And since most of the population in Northern Cyprus are Turkish Cypriots, this holiday has become a national treasure of this beautiful country. It is celebrated in the TRNC at a high level and on a large scale.

TRNC Foundation Day

November 15 is a truly special day for the local population. Since 1983, the tradition of celebrating the day of the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has been carried out. The holiday is emotional, despite the fact that Northern Cyprus is recognized by only a small number of countries in the world and it is not on official maps.

North Cyprus

Cyprus is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. It just so happens that real estate and tourism in the TRNC are closely linked. When compared, prices in North Cyprus are much cheaper than in the South Side. And this is not the only advantage of the northern part of the island. Many Russian-speakers decide to buy real estate after a tour. You can come for an introductory tour for 2-3 days and look for a cool villa or apartment. There are no accurate statistics on the number of transactions involving Russians. In 90% of cases, clients conclude transactions for the purchase of real estate through local agencies. And they, in turn, maintain the anonymity of property owners, just as the island itself does not provide information to third countries. This is our island 🙂 🙂 🙂 We got used to it and it became native to us! Come and see for yourself its beauty, the grandeur of the mountain peaks and the beautiful sea… Source: Veles Property Article prepared by: Valerii Veles
