A bit of history…
History of Ercan Airport (TRNC). Ercan State Airport was named after pilot Fehmi Ercan. He died in the landing zone on the first day of the military operation on July 20, 1974. There was a period of time when they wanted to rename the airport, but the people were against it. Citizens launched a campaign under the slogan “Do not touch the name of the airport.” After a wave of protests, President Ersin Tatar took a step back and did not rename the name of the airport. Ersan Saner called Hakan Ercan and said that the name of the airport will not change. Hakan Ercan, who lost his father when he was 9 years old, thanked Saner cordially. “My whole concern was to resolve this issue in such a way that my 86-year-old mother would not even hear of these ideas,” Ercan told Hakanu.
Dedicated to my father…
I was not even 9 years old when I lost my father. But I remember very well how we said goodbye to him because of the Cyprus peacekeeping operation. One day, while walking down the street with friends, they said: “Someone’s father died.” I was sure it wasn’t my father. I said to all the boys then: “My father is a pilot. This time he did not fly. He left on a special mission. It’s someone else’s dad who died.” In my childish mind, I thought pilots couldn’t die on the ground. And I ran up to my house, I saw an ambulance and a lot of people. Have you ever highlighted the walls and ceiling of an airplane riddled with mortar shells? It was the killer holes that killed my father. And I tried to understand with my childish mind, how did it happen? And I could not find words and tears flowed down my cheeks… It didn’t fit in my head…
Afterwards, I looked at other fathers and missed him very much. I couldn’t believe that my dad wouldn’t come home from work and would never smile at me again. On the anniversary of my father’s death, my brother and mother and I attended the celebrations at the airport named after my father. Someone at the microphone said that he had served as an officer in a Turkish Cypriot regiment in Nicosia 3 years before this operation. I listened to these words, and tears flowed down my cheeks again. “Your father’s unconditional faith and dedication to the cause of Northern Cyprus were unparalleled,” the speaker continued to speak into the microphone. Many years have passed since then, and I have grown up. But I will never forget my father and the warmth of his hands. He is in my heart forever. Thank you to everyone who supported and continues to support my family to this day!
It’s him. It’s Ercan!

However, despite all this heat, the airport staff and other employees are constantly working to be friendly and kind at all times. Today, the airport attracts attention not only as a complex designed for boarding and departure, but also as a well-equipped building, taking into account all the needs of people. There are, for example, car rental offices, information desks where you can buy plane tickets, VIP terminals, retail outlets, restaurants, exchange offices and much more… When visiting Northern Cyprus, you can always be sure of the hospitality of this beautiful and warm country. We are waiting for you!
Cyprus
The island of Cyprus is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. And over its centuries-old history, it has been repeatedly conquered and colonized. Boasting one of the oldest recorded histories in the world, Cyprus sits at the crossroads of three continents. The island occupies a key strategic position at the gates of Europe, Asia and Africa. The island was once rich in copper and timber reserves, which gave it economic and strategic value. In addition, Cyprus has been blessed with exquisite natural beauty, a fitting birthplace for the legendary ancient goddess Aphrodite. After all, it was she, according to legends, who came out of the waves near Paphos. Although historians argue about how much and what evidence there is. But you must admit that it really sounds very beautiful. Here are the remains of the oldest known settlements, between 9000 and 6000 years ago. For example, in the 4th century BC, the island was claimed by Alexander the Great himself. And after the second half of the XX century, it was divided into two parts. This is a great island with no less great History.
